Mercury Fountain
One fountain that uses mercury rather than water is the mercury fountain. It is actually made for it. One of the best examples for this is the modern sculpture that was designed by an American artist named Alexander Calder. His work was commissioned in World Exhibition in Paris in the year 1937 by the Republican Government of Spain. The art that Alexander Calder made was for the siege of Almaden memorial by the troop of General Franco that supplied 60 percent mercury to the world. And right now, the fountain that was made by Calder was displayed in Barcelona, at the Fundacio Joan Miro, and is covered with glass for safety purposes.
In some Islamic castles in Spain, mercury fountains exist, and the said to be most famous mercury fountain is found in Cordoba at Kasr-al-Kholaifa. Well, for all we know, Barcelona has a lot of water fountains that are very decorative, so the mercury fountain is one of those, aside from its beauty, it is some kind of a unique work, instead of flowing water, it’s the mercury that flows. Actually, the mercury fountain is one of the most amazing fountains that can be found in Spain, the uniqueness of it attracts the people and the beauty that it shows gives life to your tired mind. Just imagine yourself watching a flowing liquid that is silver in color, I’m pretty sure that you will be amazed. The mercury that flows from this fountain is really good in the eyes, and it will somehow give you the thought of how intelligent people are.
The mercury fountain of Alexander Calder was even placed beside Picasso’s artwork which is the Guernica. Then the fountain was donated to the Museum of Miro by Calder to serve as his token of friendship. And then Almaden, Spain was known in the world as the largest mercury reservoir. The mercury fountain was placed behind a glass to keep the security of the artwork.
